Create your home First Aid Kit Supplies

Here’s a checklist you can use for building your own first aid kit:

Store these items in a water tight utility box.

  • Antiseptic towelettes
  • Antiseptic ointment
  • Ammonia inhalant
  • Instant ice packs
  • Bandage scissors
  • Assorted pads: Alcohol, Sterile, Iodine Prep
  • Assorted tapes: Surgical, Transpore, Micropore, Duct
  • Assorted bandages: Adhesive, Elastic, Fingertip, Knuckle, Butterfly, Burn
  • Sponge packs
  • Burn gel to treat burns
  • Sterile eye wash
  • Eye pads
  • Tweezers
  • Gauze
  • First aid cream
  • Pain reliever
  • Safety pins
  • Adhesive spots

Emergency Food and Water Kit

Have at least a three-day supply of food and water on hand. Choose ready-to-eat foods that your family likes and doesn’t need refrigeration.

WATER

  • Drinking water – at least two litres per person per day

FOOD

  • Canned food – soups, stews, baked beans, pasta, meat, poultry, fish, vegetables, fruits
  • Crackers and biscuits
  • Honey, peanut butter, syrup, jam, salt and pepper, sugar, instant coffee, tea

EQUIPMENT

  • Knives, forks, spoons
  • Disposable cups and plates
  • Manual can opener, bottle opener
  • Fuel stove and fuel (follow manufacturer’s instructions.) Don’t use a barbecue indoors.
  • Waterproof matches and plastic garbage bags

Emergency Survival Kit

  • Flashlight and batteries
  • Radio and batteries or crank radio
  • Spare batteriesFirst-aid kit
  • Candles and matches/lighter
  • Extra car keys and cash (including coins/cards for telephone)
  • Important papers (identification for everyone, personal documents)
  • Food and bottled water (see above)
  • Clothing and footwear (one change of clothes per person)
  • Blankets or sleeping bags (one blanket or sleeping bag per person)
  • Toilet paper and other personal supplies
  • Medication
  • Backpack/duffel bag (or something else to carry the emergency survival kit in, in case you have to evacuate)
  • Whistle (in case you need to attract someone’s attention)
  • Playing cards, games

Emergency Car Kit

Keep as many of the items in the passenger compartment of the vehicle while you travel. You may not be able to get access to the storage area to retrieve them.
